- Believed to date from 1127, the site of the castle has been occupied by a residence since the time of the First Crusade. The first known reference dates from this period.
- Little documentation exists regarding the buildings until reconstructions took place in 1561 and 1800. The owners were reportedly the Roubaix family, judging from the arms on an early part of the building, followed by the de Lannoy family whose descendants still own it.
Notable Events
- The castle is chiefly notable as the site where the Belgian capitulation was signed on May 28, 1940, during the Battle of the Lys. At this time, it served as the headquarters of the German 6th Army.
- The Belgian plenipotentiaries arrived at the castle at 9:35 am and subsequently met with General Walther von Reichenau and Major-General Friedrich Paulus in the dining room. Discussions took place from 10:00 am onwards, after which the surrender became effective.
