History

This structure was originally built as a Mesoamerican step-pyramid that dominated the center of the Chichen Itza archaeological site in the Mexican state of Yucatán. The temple building is more formally designated by archaeologists as Chichen Itza Structure 5B18.

El Castillo is a pyramid with nine levels, each decreasing in size, and four staircases leading to the summit. The structure's architecture is characteristic of Mesoamerican step-pyramids, featuring a series of flat platforms and a central temple at its peak. The pyramid's design is believed to have been inspired by the ancient Mayan civilization.
