A medieval fortress situated on the south slopes of Medvednica mountain, approximately halfway from Zagreb to the mountain top Sljeme.

History

  • Medvedgrad was built in 1300 for defensive purposes. The castle's strategic location allowed it to control the surrounding area and protect the nearby town of Radaslije.

Architecture

The fortress is characterized by its medieval architectural style, with a mix of stone and brick construction. The main tower stands prominently on the hill of Mali Plazur, overlooking the city of Zagreb. Below the main tower lies Oltar Domovine (Altar of the Homeland), dedicated to Croatian soldiers killed in the Croatian War of Independence.

Medvedgrad is located about 10 km north of Zagreb, in the town of Radaslije, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The castle can be seen from a distance on a clear day, particularly the high main tower.

The fortress played an important role in Croatian history, serving as a defensive stronghold during times of war. In 1994, the altar of the homeland was opened by Croatian President Dr. Franjo Tuđman, marking a significant event in the castle's history.
