Château de Belcastel

The Château de Belcastel is a medieval castle situated above the north bank of the river Aveyron, downstream from Rodez, in the commune of Belcastel, France.

History

  • The oldest part of the castle was constructed in the 9th century. Over the centuries, it changed hands several times, with notable families including the Belcastels and the Saunhacs.
  • The castle remained abandoned since at least the 17th century until its rediscovery by French architect Fernand Pouillon in 1974.

Pouillon undertook a remarkable restoration project, reconstructing the fortress over eight years without using modern machinery. He also restored the village, which is now recognized as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages in France").

Architecture

  • The Château de Belcastel features an architectural style characteristic of medieval French fortresses.
  • The layout includes a mix of rectangular and circular structures, with walls constructed from limestone and granite.

The castle's design is notable for its strategic location, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Aveyron River. This natural defense system has been preserved during the restoration process.

Location

The Château de Belcastel is located in the commune of Belcastel, in the Aveyron département of France. The village and castle are situated above the north bank of the river Aveyron, downstream from Rodez.

Current Status and Use

In 2005, the owners of the AFA Gallery in New York purchased the château and opened it to the public as both a gallery and a historical monument. They have embellished the interior with medieval artifacts and created art galleries within the château, while allowing the medieval fortress and remarkable architecture to remain undisturbed.

Heritage Status

The Château de Belcastel was officially declared a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture in 1928.
