Château de Ranton

History

• The castle was built as part of the fortifications constructed to defend the royal city of Loudun at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War (1340-1345). It played a military role until 1372, when it became a feudal manor and one of the estates of aristocratic families associated with the Courts of the French Kings and the Dukes of Anjou.
• In the 16th century, the buildings inside the main rampart wall were rebuilt in the Renaissance style as the home of Protestant families during the French Wars of Religion.
