The Château d'Hérouville, commonly referred to as Honky Château, is a French 18th-century stately château located in the village of Hérouville, in the Val d'Oise département of France, near Paris.

History

Built in 1740 by architect Gaudot from the remains of an earlier 16th-century château, the Château d'Hérouville was originally constructed as a private residence. In the 19th century, it served as a courier relay station between Versailles and Beauvais, housing hundreds of horses.

The château's architecture is characterized by its 18th-century style, with influences from the school of Rome. The layout features a classical design, typical of French stately homes during this period.

The Château d'Hérouville has played host to several notable events. In the mid-19th century, composer Frédéric Chopin conducted his love affair with writer George Sand at the château. The estate was also visited by Vincent van Gogh, who is buried nearby.

The Château d'Hérouville has undergone various transformations over the years. In the late 1960s, it began functioning as a recording studio, producing iconic hit records throughout the 1970s until its closure in 1985. The studio reopened in 2020.
