Vieux-Château

The Vieux-Château is a historic castle located on Île d'Yeu off the French Atlantic coast in the département of Vendée.

History

• The construction of the Vieux-Château began during the 14th century, with Olivier IV de Clisson undertaking the work to protect the islanders from foreign invasion. The castle was later occupied by Robert Knolles, an English pirate, who seized it in 1355 and held it for 37 years.
• In 1381, the castle was retaken during the reconquest of Poitou by Olivier V de Clisson's son.
• During the Renaissance, Jean V de Rieux erected towered walls around the castle, using Italian engineers brought back from the Italian Wars by King Francis I. This style of construction proved effective in 1550 when Spanish soldiers attacked from the north, but were held off under the walls by the local garrison and forced to retreat.
