Fortezza Medicea

The Fortezza Medicea is a medieval fortress located on the highest point of the hill overlooking the town of Volterra, Italy.

History

  • Built on the highest point of the hill overlooking the town, the Fortezza Medicea was constructed over several centuries. The southern part of the fortress was built at the command of Walter VI, Duke of Athens, who had been appointed governor of Florence in 1342. This section of the fortress predated the ascendancy of the Medicis.
  • Over time, the relationship between Volterra and Florence became increasingly complicated and confrontational. In the 1470s, the discovery of valuable alum locally focused the interest of Florence, leading to a siege and sacking of the town in 1472. The fortress was subsequently upgraded by Lorenzo the Magnificent, who also constructed an adjacent newer fortress in 1474.

Architecture

The Fortezza Medicea features an architectural style typical of medieval fortresses in Italy. The southern section was built using local stone and features a mix of Gothic and Renaissance influences. The adjacent newer fortress, constructed by Lorenzo the Magnificent, showcases a more refined and elegant design.

Layout

The layout of the fortress is characterized by a series of interconnected walls and towers, designed to provide maximum defense against potential attackers. The "curtain wall" that links the two fortresses serves as a testament to the engineering skills of its medieval builders.

Location

The Fortezza Medicea is located in Volterra, Italy, on the highest point of the hill overlooking the town. The address is Viale Bruno Buozzi.

Current Status and Use

Today, the Fortezza Medicea serves as a medium-security prison, with restricted access to the interior for tourists. A notable exception is that part of the fortress is used for a restaurant operated by supervised prisoners.

Heritage Status

The Fortezza Medicea has been recognized for its historical and architectural significance. Its current status as a prison has not diminished its importance as a cultural landmark, and it continues to be an important part of Volterra's history and identity.

Visiting Information

Due to its use as a prison, access to the interior of the Fortezza Medicea is restricted. However, tourists can view the exterior of the fortress and explore the adjacent town of Volterra, which offers a range of cultural attractions and historical landmarks.
