Yılankale

Yılankale, also known as Snake Castle, is a late 12th–13th century Armenian castle located on a rocky hill overlooking the east bank of the Ceyhan River in Adana Province, Turkey.

History

  • The castle is believed to have been built during the reign of King Leo I the Magnificent (r. 1198/9–1219) of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.
  • It was known as Levonkla (Լևոնկլա "Levon's fortress") in Armenian, and its medieval names were also recorded as Kovara and Vaner.

Yılankale is a hill castle situated on a rocky outcrop six kilometers west of the town of Ceyhan. The building's architecture reflects its purpose as a fortified stronghold, with thick stone walls and narrow windows.

Locally, it is known as the home of Shahmaran, a mythical creature half woman and half snake.
